The Eames’ journey across Europe
Charles and Ray Eames are a superbly impressive pair of artists. Their breakthrough designs have led many to consider them to be two of the most inspiring designers of the 20th century. We were given the responsibility of transporting their travelling exhibition from Umeå to Lisbon. A challenging journey with extreme requirements for security and management.
The Charles and Ray Eames exhibition draws the viewer into their art that transcends boundaries and switches freely between photography, film, architecture, furniture design and product design. An exciting world of innovation and creativity.
Through our English agent Momart we were commissioned by the Barbican Centre to manage the transport of this travelling exhibition. The first leg was from London to Bildmuseet in Umeå and included complex customs clearance for the pieces from the US. Our customs expert Mikael Ekman dealt with the clearance process.
When the exhibition closed in Umeå, we were commissioned to transport the exhibition the whole way to the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) in Lisbon. This journey of more than 4000 kilometres was undertaken in an art-transport vehicle with trailer, in which the exhibition travelled, and an extra car with trailer from our Tour Department, for the transport of plinths and glass cases. The transport of the exhibition complied with our high standards of care and security.
“The route from Umeå was planned to the smallest detail, and included securing the vehicle at high-security depots in Stockholm, Germany, France, Spain and Portugal,”
The project is a good example of how we work when transporting a travelling exhibition. Long journeys such as this require very careful preparation and coordination along the complete route.
“It’s very gratifying to work with such projects. This was positive challenge that brought out the best in us. We are happy that we can contribute and spread art in a safe and secure manner over the whole of Europe. We go where the art takes us!”
