Printing machinery on tour
This touring event travelled to companies in six different towns to allow the industry to see and touch machines and software in an authentic printing and book-binding environment.
Exhibitors included companies such as Map, Konica Minolta, Ricoh, Océ and Heidelberg. MTAB received an enquiry from AGI in the spring of 2009 concerning the handling of all transportation during Tryckstart, as well as all loading and unloading the machines at the various destinations. The commission also included picking up all materials from exhibitors and delivering them back again after the trade fair.
– We received lists of machines from the participating exhibitors and were able to work on the basis of these to determine the number of trucks and trailers needed for the job, explains Linda Ericsson, project manager at MTAB.
During the three weeks of Tryckstart, MTAB dedicated two trucks and trailers to transportation and used the same personnel the whole time.
From our point of view, the difficulty lay in coordinating the pickup of all the machinery before the trade fair began and then taking it back again, says Linda Ericsson, who worked almost full-time on the job over the project period. We are used to handling fragile and unpackaged goods, so in my opinion the actual transportation went really well and the drivers did a brilliant job.
MTAB had also acquired comprehensive combination insurance to cover the entire exhibition at all six locations, as well as interim storage.
– This considerably reduced both our administration and the administration of the exhibitors, says Linda.
It was important for both AGI’s project manager and the representatives of the exhibiting companies to get to know our drivers and for them to find out more about the various machines that we were transporting, continues Linda Ericsson.
The exhibition was open every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon for the three weeks. On the Monday, MTAB unloaded all the equipment, Tuesday was an exhibition day, loading took place on the Wednesday, then transport and unloading followed by exhibition took place on the Thursday. MTAB was responsible for storage of the machines over the weekends.
These big machines do not really like being loaded and unloaded like this. For a tour like this to work, you need a talented electrician and a very talented shipping agent. MTAB handled the latter with aplomb, says Peter Ollén, publisher at AGI and the initiator of and project manager for Tryckstart.
“Great job! All the machines came back in one piece and fully functional despite all the loading and unloading that went on.
