Patrik works closely with customers
Patrik Edström from MTAB takes the pressure off engineers from medical technology companies when it comes to mechanical installation of medical equipment.
Patrik Edström has been involved in many medical equipment installations carried out by MTAB over the past few years. He is also the first of MTAB’s fitters to be trained by licensed engineers from GE Healthcare for mechanical installations. This allows MTAB to take over large elements of installation and all GE Healthcare needs is to have its own engineers on site.
– But we supply, install and dismantle equipment for all the major medical companies – Philips, Siemens and GE, he says in a phone call on his way to an installation project in Umeå. I am going to work with an engineer from GE Healthcare to install a CT scanner at the University Hospital.
As a fitter, Patrik carries out all the preparations before the engineers calibrate the machines. Among other things, this involves rolling the equipment into the right place, bolting it to the floor and laying all the cables.
According to Patrik, no two jobs are alike. This is particularly true of the large MR cameras, where just planning the installations takes place several weeks in advance.
– We also need to do quite a bit of on-site improvisation, when maybe the construction company has missed a few centimetres here and there when preparing the route to the final installation point. Some MR installations weigh up to ten tonnes, the heaviest section weighing around six to eight tonnes.
– The installation of new machines is the most fun part of my job, says Patrik, admitting that dismantling old machines is not one of his favourite pastimes!
