Collaboration with a focus on photography
Fotografiska is no ordinary museum. The fact is that the word “museum” has been excluded from its name because Fotografiska has many different activities – it is an international hub centred around photography. MTAB have been taking care of most of Fotografiska’s exhibition logistics and warehousing since it opened in 2010.
Fotografiska is a gateway to an exciting world of different impressions. Exhibitions are put on here to showcase world-famous icons … but also unknown visual artists waiting to be discovered. The exhibitions vary from black-and-white photographs to video installations, from early-20th-century to extremely modern contemporary art. The aim is for exhibitions always to be of a topical nature while at the same time reaching out to a wide audience. It is not just visual art that is the focus, however: the concept Fotografiska For Life uses photographic expression to raise awareness of important societal issues.
The work involved in co-ordinating different exhibitions held in quick succession requires well-oiled machinery. Johan Vikner is the exhibition co-ordinator at Fotografiska, the person who is responsible for everything from the selection of artists to the setting up of exhibitions. His work depends largely on short lead times where every stage of the process is crucial for the final outcome – work that makes enormous demands on the exhibition logistics provider.
“MTAB are always extremely professional in everything they do – everything from collection and unloading on site to booking and execution, not to mention their ability to constantly meet our specific requirements. Their flexibility is key to so much of what we do,”
Johan emphasises that when it comes to exhibition logistics, quality is extremely important. In a lot of cases, the value of what is being handled is considerable. There are stringent requirements as regards handling, wrapping, packaging and warehousing. It is essential that quality be top-drawer and consistent at every stage. The warehousing options available are also very important for an operation such as Fotografiska’s. MTAB’s warehouse in Bromma is where pieces destined for upcoming exhibitions are stored, as well as a large number of pieces that are part of Fotografiska’s private collections.
“Having warehousing and transport taken care of by the same supplier is something of great value to us. It is easy for us to know what is being stored where now, and booking the transport of pieces is really smooth and straightforward – yet another aspect that increases our flexibility considerably,”
A further contributory factor to Fotografiska’s decision to choose MTAB was their acute environmental awareness. Fotografiska operates on the basis of its objective to be a green organisation, all of whose activities are run with a focus on the environment at every stage.
“Environmental focus was a high priority for us in our choice of MTAB as a partner.MTAB have taken every opportunity, on their own initiative, to reduce emissions as far as possible,”
Johan believes it stands to reason that MTAB’s successful and productive collaboration with Fotografiska will continue and emphasises that the future is going to provide plenty of exciting challenges.
